Bold statement: Australia’s T20 World Cup dream ends in the group stage after a washout that reshaped the race to the Super Eights. But here’s where it gets controversial: a rainy day decided the fate of a team, rewriting the event’s narrative more than any ball on the field.
Australia exited the tournament before completing their group fixtures when Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland in Sri Lanka was abandoned due to persistent rain. Each side collected a single point from the tied rain-off, leaving Australia stuck on two points. They cannot overhaul Zimbabwe, who sit on five, even if they win their final fixture against Oman on Friday (early Saturday 12:30am AEDT).
The downpour at Pallekele International Stadium kept the covers on for much of the day, and the match was eventually called off two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled start. As a result, Zimbabwe advanced to the Super Eight alongside Sri Lanka, with the Group A decider between those two teams looming on Thursday to determine the group winner.
This marks Australia’s first group-stage exit from a World Cup in either the T20 or ODI formats since 2009. Their only win in the campaign came against Ireland, who themselves were eliminated by the washout.
Seven teams have now progressed to the second round.
In the other developments: Zimbabwe, joining defending champions India, West Indies, and South Africa in Group 1, will vie for top spot with Sri Lanka—who sit in Group 2 alongside England, New Zealand, and either Pakistan or the USA.
Earlier in the day, Canada’s Yuvraj Samra produced a brilliant century in vain as New Zealand cruised to an eight-wicket victory in Chennai, sealing progression to the Super Eights and knocking Afghanistan, who reached the 2024 semi-finals, out of contention.
