Hold on tight! The 2026 Golden Globes are underway, and while the fashion on the red carpet is dazzling (especially our Aussie stars!), the real drama is unfolding as the awards are handed out. The frontrunner of the night seems to be One Battle After Another, but will it sweep all the categories? Let's dive into the winners so far, and unpack some of the most talked-about moments.
'We’re magpies': PTA picks up first trophy for *One Battle After Another*

After a truly… unique opening performance by Nikki Glaser (seriously, her KPop Demon Hunters' Golden rendition was... something), Paul Thomas Anderson snagged the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for his thought-provoking political comedy-thriller, One Battle After Another. My colleague summed it up best: "That was brave!"
This wasn't a shoo-in, folks. Anderson's script faced stiff competition from the critically acclaimed It Was Just an Accident, Hamnet, and Sinners. But, let's be honest, many predicted this win, especially given the film's recent triumph at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Was it pre-ordained? Some might say so, given the buzz around the film. But here's where it gets controversial... Does winning one award really guarantee success at others?
Despite his status as a celebrated director, Anderson accepted the award with grace, humility, and a rather intriguing bird metaphor. He acknowledged his reliance on others for inspiration, stating, “I’ve written for a lot of people in this room … I tell you, the moment it’s out of the room and actors are saying it, then it’s great.” He continued, “Writers, we’re magpies. We steal all the bits and pieces that everybody says as best we can … I stole some words from Nina Simone. Someone asked her what freedom was and she said ‘no fear’. That’s a pretty great line.” This highlights the collaborative nature of filmmaking, where writers draw inspiration from the world around them.

‘Rejection is redirection’: The most emotional speech of the night
By Bronte Gossling
So far, it's been a tough night for Wicked: For Good. Ariana Grande lost out to Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) for Best Supporting Actress. Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo both missed out on Best Original Song (Motion Picture) to Netflix's animated hit, KPop Demon Hunters. Talk about a shakeup!
Singer Charli XCX and actor-singer Joe Keery presented the award to a tearful Ejae and her songwriting team. Ejae, who co-wrote the film's biggest songs and voiced Rumi (the lead character), delivered a powerful acceptance speech.
“Thank you so much to [the] Golden Globes for this incredible honour, I’m just so honoured to be alongside the other nominees, you’re just so incredible,” Ejae said, her voice thick with emotion. “As a little girl, I worked tirelessly for 10 years for one dream, to become a K-pop idol. I was rejected and disappointed that my voice wasn’t good enough so I leaned on songs and music to get through it. Now I’m here as a singer and songwriter.
