The College Football Playoff (CFP) organization has unveiled the schedule for the highly anticipated 2026 and 2027 Playoff seasons, but not everyone is on board with the timing. Florida's head coach, Jon Sumrall, has passionately voiced his disagreement with the CFP calendar, labeling it 'asinine' and 'absurd'.
The 2026 quarterfinals are set to commence on December 30, with the Fiesta Bowl, followed by the Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Rose Bowl on January 1, 2027. The semifinals will then kick off two weeks later, with the Orange Bowl on January 14 and the Sugar Bowl on January 15. The National Championship Game will be held on January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.
But here's where it gets controversial: Sumrall argues that the NCAA should adjust the season's timing to conclude closer to the start of January, rather than the end. He believes the current calendar is illogical, especially considering the championship game's late January date.
Sumrall's plea delves deeper, touching on the misalignment between the academic calendar and the football season. He highlights the recent changes in the high school signing date and the Transfer Portal window, which he believes have created a disjointed system. Sumrall suggests that moving the season earlier could help realign the academic and football calendars, making it more manageable for student-athletes.
