Kahleah Copper has truly shone since joining the Phoenix Mercury at the beginning of the 2024 season, making a significant mark on the team. The Mercury secured her talents by trading Michaela Onyenwere, Brianna Turner, along with some draft picks to the Chicago Sky—a move that has already proven to be beneficial.
Copper's impact is particularly noteworthy as she previously played a crucial role in helping the Chicago Sky clinch their first championship title, earning the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award during a thrilling series against none other than the Mercury.
During her inaugural season with Phoenix, Copper achieved remarkable success, averaging an impressive career-high of 21.1 points per game. One standout moment came during a match against the Atlanta Dream, where she exploded for a personal best of 38 points, leading her team to a hard-fought 88-85 victory.
In that game, she wasn’t alone in her scoring effort; the legendary Diana Taurasi contributed with 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, while Sophie Cunningham added a solid performance off the bench with 10 points, six rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
Throughout the season, Copper consistently demonstrated her scoring prowess, amassing a total of 782 points—marking the second time in her career that she surpassed the 700-point threshold in a single season. This achievement echoed her previous season in 2023 when she scored 710 points while playing for the Sky.
In that 2023 season, which was Copper’s last with Chicago, she averaged 18.7 points, helping the team reach the playoffs. During that playoff journey, she notably scored 40 points in a game, though the Sky faced a tough opponent in the Las Vegas Aces, who ultimately swept them out of the postseason.
Looking ahead to the 2024 playoffs, Copper continued to make her presence felt, scoring 29 points as the Mercury clashed with the Minnesota Lynx. Unfortunately for Phoenix, they were eliminated in a 2-0 series loss. In the first game, Copper was one of four players to hit double figures, contributing 16 points alongside a remarkable performance from Natasha Cloud, who led the scoring with 33 points. Taurasi and Brittney Griner also chipped in with 21 and 10 points, respectively.
In the subsequent game, Copper again found herself among the top scorers, putting up 13 points while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists. Griner was the star of the night with 24 points, followed by Cloud with 16 points, Natasha Mack with 12, and Taurasi with 10.
