A Humble Hero: Crystal Conrad's Impactful Journey
Imagine receiving a call that changes your perspective on your entire career. That's exactly what happened to Crystal Conrad when she learned she'd be honored with Nova Scotia Health's Making Waves Award of Distinction. Her initial reaction? She thought it was a joke, a testament to her humble nature.
With over three decades in healthcare, including 20 years as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) in Western Zone, Crystal has dedicated her career to teamwork, humility, and service. Her work in the health protection division of Public Health involves supporting individuals and communities affected by communicable diseases, and she does so alongside a team she deeply respects.
"I feel incredibly humbled and grateful to be nominated," Crystal shares. "I see myself as just one small part of a larger, dedicated team in health protection. I'm fortunate to work with such intelligent and committed colleagues."
Melissa Legge, the PHN immunization lead who nominated Crystal for the award, believes she deserves more recognition. "Crystal is an exceptional mentor and friend who embodies the spirit of nursing, collaboration, and community. She approaches her work with thoroughness, thoughtfulness, and grace, always adding a touch of humor. She's an invaluable asset to our team and Nova Scotia Health."
A Passionate Protector of Health
Health protection, according to Crystal, is a unique space where nursing assessment skills take center stage but are applied in innovative ways. From investigating communicable diseases to educating the public and collaborating with partners, her work is complex, ever-evolving, and deeply engaging.
"We receive calls daily from healthcare providers seeking advice," she explains. "We work closely with long-term care facilities, infection prevention teams, and others to prevent the spread of illness in healthcare settings and communities."
Much of this work happens behind the scenes, and for most of Crystal's career, the role of health protection in keeping Nova Scotians safe and healthy was largely unseen. That changed in 2020 when the pandemic brought this essential work into the public eye.
During this time, Crystal's focus shifted from supporting her zone to leading the provincial response. She guided a team of nurses from across Nova Scotia, many new to health protection, joined by other Public Health team members - health promoters, dental hygienists, community home visitors, and more - all united with a common goal.
"We had a collective purpose. We were all working towards the same goal of keeping our community safe."
Reflecting on this experience, Crystal describes it as challenging, transformative, and affirming. The relationships built during this time continue to shape how Public Health operates provincially.
"Everyone brought their unique skills to the table. I'm truly proud of that experience and the impact we had."
Mentorship and Legacy
Crystal's pride in collective success and her gratitude towards her mentors are integral to her identity. She credits Kim Benjamin, Karen McMullin, Carolyn Power, Nadine Saunders, and Kim McGill, current and former colleagues, for sharing their wisdom and leaving a lasting impression. Now, she pays it forward by mentoring young nurses entering Public Health.
To these aspiring nurses, she offers this advice: "Every interaction matters, whether in person or over the phone. Be open to change, flexible, and take every opportunity to build your capacity. Each experience enhances your assessment skills."
Crystal's Making Waves Award of Distinction celebrates a career built on curiosity, compassion, and collaboration. Her journey reminds us that lasting impact can be achieved through daily acts of teamwork, mentorship, and client-centric work.
