NBA Europe: A Doubtful Venture?
In a recent podcast appearance, AS Monaco's Mike James has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the highly anticipated NBA Europe project. With a launch date set for 2027, James questions whether the project will ever see the light of day, citing an abundance of uncertainties.
"I'm not convinced it's happening in two years," James stated on the URBONUS podcast. "They keep promising, but I just don't see it materializing. It's my honest opinion. Who's going to be playing in this league, anyway?"
But here's where it gets controversial... James also takes issue with the focus on the UK market, a market he believes is already "tapped out." He argues that even an NBA game in London couldn't fill the arena, using the example of a recent game featuring Ja Morant and Paolo Banchero as evidence.
"It wasn't a full house for those stars. So, imagine Mike James and Kendrick Nunn trying to draw a crowd? You know what I mean? Maybe I'm wrong, but you can't just put a London team in London and expect fans to flock."
James' teammate, Jaron Blossomgame, agrees that the initial excitement surrounding NBA Europe has faded as more details emerged. "It had so much momentum at first, but now it just doesn't make sense. The big clubs in EuroLeague seem set to stay put."
And this is the part most people miss... Blossomgame and James both highlight the importance of fan engagement and rich team histories. Without teams like the Greek, Serbian, Turkish, and Lithuanian clubs, as well as prestigious Spanish teams, they believe NBA Europe will struggle to find an audience.
"You need fans, and you need teams with rich histories and traditions. Without that, you're just left with empty gyms," James emphasized.
So, will NBA Europe ever become a reality? Only time will tell, but for now, the doubts and uncertainties linger.
What are your thoughts? Do you think NBA Europe has a chance, or is it destined to remain a pipe dream? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
