Winter Olympics Ice Hockey: NHL's Perspective on Milan-Cortina Games Test Event
The NHL has expressed its satisfaction with the test event held at the Santagiulia Arena for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Despite initial concerns, the league is optimistic about the tournament's prospects.
Construction delays and ice quality doubts had raised questions about the participation of NHL players in the Winter Games for the first time since 2014. However, the NHL and NHL Players' Association statement revealed their commitment to ongoing monitoring and support.
Seven games were played in the arena over three days, with the NHL emphasizing the importance of addressing remaining issues around the clock. They aim to ensure the local organizing committee, the IOC, and the IIHF deliver an exceptional tournament with optimal playing conditions for the world's top players.
The Santagiulia Arena, approved by the IIHF, presents a unique challenge with its shorter rink compared to NHL standards, potentially increasing high-speed collisions. During the test event, a minor delay occurred due to a small hole in the ice, which was promptly repaired.
IIHF President Luc Tardif assured that the ice surface was smooth and suitable for play. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman acknowledged the ongoing construction and new ice challenges but expressed confidence in the organizers' ability to meet deadlines. The NHL's expertise in the field positions them as valuable contributors to the event's success.
The Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina will take place from February 6th to 22nd, with ice hockey matches alternating between the Santagiulia Arena and the Milano Rho Arena.
