Get ready, architecture enthusiasts! 2026 is shaping up to be a landmark year for American architecture, with several highly anticipated projects slated for completion. From coast to coast, these buildings promise to redefine skylines and cultural landscapes. Let's dive into some of the most exciting developments, spanning from Chicago to the bustling metropolises of New York and Texas.
First up, we have the Buffalo Bills Stadium in New York, designed by Populous. This new Highmark Stadium, adjacent to the current stadium, will boast stacked seating for approximately 62,000 fans and a striking, perforated exterior. While it maintains the open-roof concept of its predecessor, it will feature a groundbreaking deep canopy, including what's touted as "the world's largest snowmelt system."
Next, we venture to Manhattan for the New Museum expansion by OMA. This project, in the works since 2019, will finally open its doors this year. The design, by OMA, features an articulated structure that tapers both upwards and downwards, creating unique street-facing spaces. This expansion will be nestled between the existing SANAA-designed building and historic brick structures.
In the heart of Texas, the Waterline skyscraper, designed by KPF in Austin, is set to make a splash. Having topped out in August 2025, it claims the title of the tallest building in Texas and the state's first supertall, reaching an impressive 1,025 feet (312 meters). Its design incorporates multiple stacked volumes supported by external columns, creating distinct program levels with outdoor and amenity spaces. The building slopes away from the Red River, integrating seamlessly with the riverfront trails.
Now, let's head to Chicago for the Obama Presidential Center, a project by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. After facing delays due to the pandemic and site selection challenges, the center is scheduled to open in southern Chicago this year. The project involves contributions from renowned artists and studios, and features a massive concrete structure with a faceted facade, set on a large site with underground parking.
Moving to Los Angeles, the futuristic Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, designed by MAD, is nearing completion. This museum, dedicated to the work of film director George Lucas, features a sweeping facade covered with thousands of fibreglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) panels and a green roof. It connects to the adjacent Exposition Park.
Back in New York, we find 520 Fifth Avenue, another supertall skyscraper designed by KPF. Rising 1,002 feet (305 meters) in Midtown Manhattan, this building, which topped out in late 2024, has a narrow form with slight setbacks. Further upstate, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, designed by Studio Gang, is set to unveil its semi-enclosed theatre this year. With a mass-timber structure, the theatre will feature a sloping roof and triangular support beams, designed to complement the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley.
Finally, in Manhattan's Nomad district, the skinny supertall skyscraper at 262 Fifth Avenue is nearing completion. This 1,001-foot-tall (305 meters) structure, designed by Meganom, will feature full-floor residences and a facade clad in aluminium and glass.
