Not everyone agrees, and that's okay! Some great novels have ordinary first lines, but I believe a unique opening sets the tone and shows your voice as an author. It's a chance to stand out and make an impact.
Breaking the Rules
When you're starting out, it's tempting to believe in absolutes. You might think there's only one way to write a story, but that's simply not true. Rules like 'uniform chapter lengths' or 'present tense brings the reader in' are just training wheels. They can help guide you, but they shouldn't limit your creativity.
The only rule I truly believe in? Don't use a gothic font to create a spooky atmosphere!
Write from the Heart
As a creative writing teacher, I always tell my students: write what only you can write. It should be a book that haunts you, a story that demands to be told. Don't try to imitate others; find your unique voice and let it shine.

When you're stuck, keep writing. If a page feels impossible, focus on a sentence. Writing is a form of thinking, and sometimes it takes persistence. Many successful writers are bullheaded; they keep going no matter what.
Embrace Your Oddness
Your obsessions and quirks are what make your work unique. Don't shy away from them! Embrace your particular brand of weirdness and let it shine through your writing.
It's easy to think you should only write about what interests you, but many excellent writers choose their material almost at random. They worry about being too passionate. But here's the thing: if you're not interested in your story, your readers won't be either. Your work might be well-crafted, but without passion, it lacks a soul.
Write When You Can
The advice to write every day is common, but it's not a hard-and-fast rule. Real writers write every day, but not everyone can or should. Some of us thrive on a different schedule, and that's okay.
Writing daily is excellent advice for some, but it's not universally useful. Life gets in the way, and that's okay too. You won't atrophy if you take a break, and you might even come back with fresh eyes and new ideas.
Don't Give Up
If you've stopped writing, don't beat yourself up. You can always start again, and you might find yourself in an even better place. The time away has changed you, and that's a good thing. It's made you more interesting and given you new perspectives.
Ideas and Drafts
Ideas can come from anywhere: an image, a line of dialogue, a setting, or a character. Some writers draft quickly, knowing they'll revise later. Others are meticulous from the start. Find your process and stick with it.
I'm a painstaking drafter; I revise and edit as I go. I can't bear to write bad sentences, because language is my passion. Sentences are my tools, my bucket, and my torch in the dreamworld of my story.
Planning and Plotting
Outlining and planning are great for some writers, but not everyone needs a detailed roadmap. For me, the joy is in the journey, discovering the story as I draft.
In fiction, mysteries are powerful, but they must be needful. Don't leave your readers in the dark unnecessarily. Fiction can disorient, but it should never confuse.
Dialogue is a powerful tool. It can bring characters to life, show their motivations, and drive the plot forward. Let your characters speak their minds, and don't be afraid to let them say strange things.
Language and Material
Metaphors should be natural, not forced. Avoid cliches and overused descriptions. Let your language be fresh and unique.
Cut unnecessary words and let your readers fill in the gaps. It adds meaning and creates a closer connection.
Write about what interests and intrigues you. It doesn't have to be personal experience; research and imagination can take you anywhere.
